The Kiwanis Club of Southwest County, St. Louis
In 2000 long-time members of the Kiwanis Club of Crest-wood- Sunset Hills
began visiting business people, school administrators and others in Valley Park. Gene
Engelhardt - responsible for more than 1,100 people joining Kiwanis over the years,
Arnold Zimmerman, Tom James and other Crestwood members made the trip to Valley
Park. At first they sought to determine if the area could support a new Kiwanis Club.
Those first visits showed the area's promise and the group began signing-up
charter members for the Kiwanis Club of Valley Park, the first new club formed in the
greater St. Louis area in many years.
Judy Gustafson from the Valley Park School District was the elected the first
president of the club.
For the first two years of its existence, finding the club meeting was a challenge.
The club met at Nicoletti's Restaurant, the local bowling alley, a Chinese restaurant, a
chicken wing joint, a Mexican restaurant and a local senior citizen complex before
settling-in at Young's Restaurant in Valley Park.
From its first days the club had close ties to the Valley Park schools and Circle Of
Concern, the local food pantry. The club hosted the Terrific Kids program in the
elementary school. Books were purchased for the Parents As Teachers families. A
scholarship for a graduating high school senior became an annual commitment. Every
December the club adopted needy families, and, the members routinely collect food for
Circle's pantry.
Club members have attended Kiwanis International Conventions held in several
U.S. cities and in Montreal. The club has also been active supporters of the Kiwanis
International Foundations and its efforts.
In 2006 the club's 2002 - 2003 president, Glenn Koenen, became the first club
member to serve as a Lieutenant Governor of the Missouri - Arkansas district of
Kiwanis.
